GUIDEValidators, 6 chapters

Cosmos validator: what it takes, costs and pays

A Cosmos validator is a node that signs Cosmos Hub blocks and earns ATOM for it. Only the 180 with the most stake are active. On 26 October 2026 the 180th held only about 608 ATOM, so getting in is easy today. Earning enough to pay for the server is the hard part.

We read the Cosmos Hub's own numbers from the chain: the active set, what the last validator holds, commission, slashing and the reward rate its parameters imply.

Then a calculator shows what you would keep each month for your stake, delegation and commission, in ATOM, and in dollars if you enter today's price.

Where do you want to start?

In this guideThe quick answer

Quick answer

How do you become a Cosmos validator?

Run a Cosmos Hub node (Gaia), synced and online all day, on a server with its signing key kept safe.

Create the validator with a transaction that sets your commission (at least 5 percent) and your own stake (at least 1 ATOM).

Be in the top 180 by stake to be active and earn. Today that took about 608 ATOM; earning enough to cover a server takes far more delegation.

  • Top 180 by stake are active
  • 21-day unbonding
  • 5 percent slashed for double signing

CHAPTER 01

What it takes to enter the active set today

The chain's own numbers, read on one day.

Only the 180 validators with the most stake sign blocks and earn rewards. On the day we read the chain, the 180th held about 608 ATOM, the 100th about 315,132 and the 10th about 8,572,416.

CHAPTER 02

How to become a Cosmos Hub validator

Node, keys, create-validator, then delegation.

Sync a Gaia node, keep its consensus key on one machine only, send a create-validator transaction with your commission and self-stake, then win delegations so you enter and stay in the top 180.

  1. Step 1: Run and sync a Gaia nodeOn a server that stays online. The Cosmos docs advise sentry nodes in front of it.
  2. Step 2: Protect the signing keyOne key, one signing machine. Two machines with the same key is how double signing happens.
  3. Step 3: Create the validatorSet a name, a commission of at least 5 percent, a maximum commission and your own stake.
  4. Step 4: Win delegationsHolders choose validators by uptime, commission, reputation and what the validator gives back to the network.

The Cosmos Hub validator FAQ adds that validators need no self-delegation beyond the 1 ATOM minimum, and that the maximum commission you set at creation can never be raised.

CHAPTER 03

How Cosmos validators are paid

Block provisions, fees and commission.

New ATOM (inflation, 10 percent a year when we read it) and fees are shared by stake. A validator keeps the rewards on its own stake plus a commission on its delegators' rewards. 113 of 180 active validators charge the 5 percent minimum, and 41 charge 10 percent.

From the chain's parameters, stakers earn roughly 15.5 percent a year before commission: inflation of 10 percent, less the 2 percent community tax, spread over the 63 percent of ATOM that is staked. It changes every block, so treat it as a rough guide, not a promise.

CHAPTER 04

What a Cosmos validator keeps each month

Your stake, delegation and commission in; ATOM out.

Enter your own stake, the ATOM delegated to you and your commission. The calculator shows what you keep each month, and, if you add today's ATOM price, how much delegation it takes for commission to cover $219 a month of hosting.

What a Cosmos Hub validator keeps each month

Our example. The chain needs at least 1 ATOM.

Our example. Other people's ATOM staked with you.

Your commission

5 percent is the chain's minimum, and most validators charge it.

Add it to see dollars and the delegation that covers hosting.

You would keep about 45.33 ATOM a month: 12.95 on your own stake and 32.38 in commission.

That stake would place you in the active set today: the 180th validator held about 608 ATOM.

Rate used: about 15.5 percent a year before commission, worked out from the chain's inflation (10 percent), community tax (2 percent) and share of ATOM staked (63 percent), read on the chain in October 2026. It moves every block and ignores fees. Not a promised return.

See the Cosmos validator

The rate comes from the chain's parameters on the day we read it; stake, delegation and price are yours. Small validators at the minimum commission rarely cover their costs from commission alone.

CHAPTER 05

Slashing, jailing and unbonding

Two slashes, a jail and a 21-day wait.

Double signing slashes 5 percent of the validator's and its delegators' stake and cannot be undone. Signing fewer than 5 percent of the last 10,000 blocks slashes 0.01 percent and jails the validator for at least 10 minutes. Unstaking takes 21 days.

CHAPTER 06

Hosting a Cosmos validator with HeroRPC

We run the node; you stake from your own wallet.

HeroRPC hosts a Cosmos Hub validator for $219 a month, with a backup node beside it that never holds the signing key. You stake from your own wallet and keep every reward. We never promise rewards.

See the Cosmos node page for what is included, or do nodes earn money? for how validators on other chains are paid.

QUESTIONS

Cosmos validator questions

How much ATOM do you need to be a Cosmos validator?

The chain asks for at least 1 ATOM of self-stake, but only the top 180 by total stake are active. On the day we read the chain, the 180th validator held about 608 ATOM; that bar moves every block.

How much do Cosmos validators earn?

A validator keeps the rewards on its own stake plus commission on its delegators' rewards. From the chain's parameters, stakers earned roughly 15.5 percent a year before commission when we read it, paid in ATOM. Nothing is guaranteed.

What commission do Cosmos validators charge?

At least 5 percent, the chain's minimum. 113 of the 180 active validators charged exactly that, and 41 charged 10 percent.

How long does unbonding take on the Cosmos Hub?

21 days. Unstaked ATOM earns nothing during that time and cannot be moved until it ends.

What gets a Cosmos validator slashed?

Double signing slashes 5 percent and is permanent. Missing more than 95 percent of the last 10,000 blocks slashes 0.01 percent and jails the validator until it unjails.

Can I run a Cosmos validator without my own server?

Yes. A hosting provider can run the node for you. On HeroRPC it is $219 a month; you keep your keys, stake from your own wallet and keep the rewards.

ABOUT

How we made this guide

On 26 October 2026 we read the Cosmos Hub's staking, slashing, mint, distribution and bank data from its REST API at block 33,589,283, and sorted the 180 active validators by stake. The reward rate is a calculation from those parameters (inflation, community tax, staked share), not a measured or promised yield. Docs facts come from the Cosmos Hub validator FAQ. Live values change every block.
