Optimism logoOptimism node

A dedicated Optimism node. OP Mainnet on a line of its own.

Your Optimism node speaks only to you. It runs the current OP Stack software on a server sized for Optimism, so a protocol team or a bot can read OP Mainnet without queuing behind anyone.

The quick test

Everything your app asks is about the latest block? Full node. Anything about a past block, such as a vote snapshot or a balance last quarter? Archive node.

03How it works

How an Optimism node works: op-node leads, the execution client follows.

Optimism splits the work in two, the way Ethereum does. Neither half is useful alone.

  1. Ethereum L1

The source for Optimism blocks. op-node needs an L1 RPC URL and an L1 beacon URL.

  2. op-node

Works out each Optimism block from the data on Ethereum and directs the execution client.

  3. Execution client

op-reth is the primary choice, with Nethermind as an alternative. It holds state and runs the EVM.

  4. Your endpoint

JSON-RPC on nodes.herorpc.com. The Engine API on 8551 stays between the two programs.

op-node is the consensus half. It turns Ethereum data into Optimism blocks and tells the other half what to run.

The two share a secret JWT file, so only op-node can steer the execution client.

op-node has its own RPC, and the OP docs say it should never be public. You only ever see the JSON-RPC endpoint.

04Know the field

Which Optimism client? op-geth is no longer an answer.

Search for an Optimism node guide and the top results still say op-geth. The OP docs say that software has reached end of support.

Archive snapshotabout 14 TB

The full node grows about 100 GB and the archive about 3.5 TB every six months, so today both are larger.

05Optimism, specifically

Six Optimism facts that old guides get wrong.

Pulled from the OP docs and checked this month.

op-geth is retired

OP says op-geth does not support the now active Karst hardfork and ended support on 31 May 2026. Guides that tell you to run it are out of date.

History starts at Bedrock

Modern nodes cannot execute blocks from before Bedrock, so stateful calls such as eth_call fail on them. A separate legacy datadir of about 2.9 TB exists for that era.

One JWT, one order

Start the execution client first, then op-node. Both read the same JWT file, and both should come from one coordinated release tag.

Two URLs from Ethereum

op-node needs an L1 RPC URL and an L1 beacon URL. Some L1 clients lack eth_getProof, and then OP says to use the trust RPC flag.

Snap sync is a choice

Execution layer sync makes a first sync a matter of hours. A full sync from scratch takes days to weeks.

Keep op-node private

JSON-RPC lives on 8545 and the Engine API on 8551. The op-node RPC is not meant to face the internet.

06Who rents one

Who rents a dedicated Optimism node.

Teams that treat OP Mainnet as infrastructure, not an experiment.

Multichain apps

Already on Ethereum and Base, now adding OP Mainnet. One more endpoint, free of any shared cap.

Governance and protocol analytics

Vote tallies and treasury balances at past blocks come from an archive node.

Withdrawal and proof tooling

Proving a withdrawal reads historical proofs, which is archive territory.

Bots on OP Mainnet

A dedicated line for reads and sends that nobody else can slow down.

07Price check

What an Optimism node costs elsewhere.

Allnodes publishes one price per node type, shown in the bars. Two other names keep their numbers behind a form.

10Questions

Optimism node questions

Real questions from node operators, answered plainly.

Should I still run op-geth for Optimism?

No. The OP docs say op-geth reached end of support on 31 May 2026 and does not handle the Karst hardfork. Use op-reth, or Nethermind as an alternative.

What does "401 Unauthorized: Signature Invalid" mean?

The two programs disagree on the JWT secret. op-node and the execution client must read the same JWT file.

What does "Wrong Chain" mean on an Optimism node?

It usually means the network settings do not match the data on disk, or the L1 behind the node belongs to another network. Check both.

Which program do I start first, op-node or the execution client?

The execution client first, then op-node. Give both the same JWT file and pin them to one coordinated release tag.

Does an unclean shutdown hurt an Optimism node?

It can. OP lists unclean shutdowns among its troubleshooting cases, so stop both programs gracefully.

Can an archive node answer eth_call on pre-Bedrock blocks?

No. Modern nodes cannot execute blocks from before Bedrock, so eth_call fails there. A legacy datadir exists for that earlier era.

How does a first sync finish faster?

Run with execution layer sync, which OP says can finish in several hours. A pre-synced datadir shortcuts it further.

Can I run OP Mainnet without an Ethereum node?

No. op-node reads an L1 RPC URL and an L1 beacon URL, so an Ethereum node has to sit behind it. When you rent one here, that Ethereum side comes from our own Ethereum node, and you bring nothing.

What do you charge for an Optimism node?

A full node is $139 a month, an archive node $289. Nothing to pay for setup, and prepaying 3, 6 or 12 months in advance takes 10, 15 or 25 percent off.

How soon can I send my first request?

Within 24 hours of payment you get the private endpoint and the server logins in your dashboard.
