How a Linea node works: Maru plus an execution client.
Every Linea node is two programs. Your app only ever sees the result.
Maru
The Linea consensus program. It listens on port 9000 for peers.
Execution client
Linea Besu, Besu, Geth or Erigon in a patched build. It holds state and runs transactions.
Ethereum, optionally
Advanced Besu profiles read Ethereum to learn which Linea blocks are finalized.
Your endpoint
JSON-RPC through nodes.herorpc.com.
Linea's own docs say a node always runs Maru, plus an execution client beside it.
You get one endpoint. Which two programs stand behind it is not your problem.
Nodes do not vote on blocks and earn nothing, so you rent one for the reads, not for rewards.

Most of this comes straight from the docs, and most of it is not on provider pages.
Two programs, always
Maru for consensus, plus Besu, Linea Besu, Geth or a patched Erigon. Docker Compose is the recommended way to run them.
The finalized tag
Linea Besu understands the finalized block tag, so an app can ask for only the blocks Ethereum has settled.
Maru ports
REST on 8080, peers on 9000 over TCP and UDP, and optional metrics on 9090.
Peers can take a while
The Docker guide says a fresh node can need up to 20 minutes to find peers. A quiet log at first is normal.
An Ethereum link, sometimes
Advanced Besu profiles point at an Ethereum RPC to check finalization. The basic profiles do not need one.
Rewards do not exist
Running a Linea node has no financial incentive, and nodes cannot vote on blocks. The value is the reads.

What is a Linea node?
A Linea node is a server that follows the Linea network and keeps its own copy of the chain. It is made of two programs: Maru, and an execution client such as Linea Besu.
What is a Linea full node?
It holds Linea's current state and recent history. About 509 GB on Linea Besu, per the docs in November 2025, and it grows slowly.
What is Linea RPC?
It is the interface your app uses to talk to a node. It supports the usual Ethereum calls and adds `linea_` methods on Linea Besu.
How do I run a Linea node myself?
Linea recommends Docker Compose: Maru plus one execution client. Expect a long first sync and up to 20 minutes just to find peers. Or rent one and get the endpoint in a day.
Does a Linea node need an Ethereum endpoint?
